SHALDON WATER CARNIVAL
The Water Carnival is the highlight of a series of events organised annually by the Shaldon Water Carnival Committee with the intention of having fun, entertainment and socially raising money for local clubs/charities and organisations, especially those connected with young people. Last year for instance we donated over £1600.

The Events Calendar starts every year with a Spring Fete held on The Green on Whitsun Bank Holiday Monday with the crowning of the year’s Carnival Queen and her princesses - our own Royal Party! The Main Event - Water Carnival Day – is held on the 1st Saturday in August. This fun event commences with beach competitions followed by a street Carnival parade for children around mid-day. Throughout there are stalls on the beach and various games and entertainments but the climax of the day is the Parade of Decorated Boats, the Water Carnival itself, at around 5 pm (tide variations permitting).
The day finishes with a musical evening on the Village Green where merrymaking continues till late.
The follow up to the Water Carnival is the Winter Ball at the beginning of December and the traditional Three Legged Fancy Dress Race around the village pubs, on Boxing Day.

Shaldon Regatta
Sunday 23rd August - Monday 31st August 2009
Shaldon Regatta is one of the oldest in existence having started in at least 1817. It is known that a rowing race was run between Teignmouth & Shaldon in 1773 as a letter to a Fanny Burney written then mentions it. It is of course possible that this was the start of a more extensive series of races and therefore a regatta.

HOMEYARDS BOTANICAL GARDENS SHALDON
The gardens are situated on one of the hillsides above Shaldon, with wonderfull views across to Teignmouth, and the East Devon and Dorset coastline.
The Gardens were created in the late 1920's and early 1930's, and are an informal terraced arboretum, with a level walk along the top. Interesting features such as a castle, pond, rill garden, and an Italianate Garden make for an interesting visit and enjoyable walk.
There is an ongoing programme of works taking place, creating a garden that will be restored to it's former glory. http://shaldonbotanicals.wordpress.com/

Dartmoor and Haytor
Looking upstream from many places in Shaldon and Ringmore, can be seen the magnificent view of Dartmoor with the famous Haytor – visible most of the year round except when fog descends on the higher levels of Dartmoor.
Haytor is probably one of the the most visited Tors on the moor as it is close to the road, and is easily found after leaving Shaldon via Bovey Tracey, and taking the B3387 that climbs up to reach the moor.
Shaldon is linked to Haytor by the Templar way. An 18 mile walk that follows the export route for granite taken from Dartmoor, passing along the Haytor Granite tramway, parts of which are still very visible, across the moor then the Stover canal, and passing through Newton Abbot towards Teignmouth and Shaldon where the granite ended up for export.
Nearby is the moor town of Bovey Tracey, and Widdicombe.

RSPB at Labrador Bay
The RSPB reserve at Labrador Bay, a mile south from Shaldon, is a well-known beauty spot that not only offers spectacular views over Lyme Bay, but also boasts an abundance of wildlife and rugged coastal walks.
The reserve was acquired by the RSPB in November 2008 to be managed as part of a working farm providing the best habitat for the cirl bunting, a rare little bird whose population is almost entirely restricted to South Devon.
Having once had a widespread range in Southern England and Wales, Cirl Buntings suffered a steady decline which continued during the 1970’s when agricultural intensification meant the loss of invertebrate rich grasslands and over winter weed-rich stubbles. In 1989 there were estimated to be a mere 118 pairs of cirl buntings in the UK.
Over the years the RSPB have been addressing the reasons for decline by offering advice and support to landowners within the birds' current range, and promoting sympathetic land management. The most recent survey in 2009 estimates there are now over 860 pairs breeding in the UK.
Labrador Bay not only offers the chance to spot this charismatic little bird in their favoured habitat, but also allows you to explore the network of paths whilst enjoying the stunning views and scenery. Labrador Bay offers a fantastic day out for all the family.

SOUTH DEVON CRAB EVENT AT SHALDON WATER CARNIVAL 2010
Mitch Tomks the owner of the acclaimed Seahorse eatery and soon-to-open RockFish restaurant is fronting a national campaign encouraging people to visit South Devon to eat locally- sourced crab.
He launched the Have a Cracking Time in South Devon campaign at the Seahorse. Mitch says: "We have the best crab in the world right on our doorstep — let's make the most of it."
The campaign, backed by local businesses and Shaldon chef Tim Bouget of up- market eatery Ode, is being promoted through the Visit South Devon tourism partnership.
The high-profile campaign is aimed at enticing visitors to the region to try locally- fished crab.
Dishes featuring crustaceans will be highlighted at food events across the region, including Shaldon Water Festival in August and October's Dartmouth Food Festival.
There will also be crab workshops and a new logo has been drawn up which businesses can display to show their support for the campaign. A new website has been created, with recipes from top chefs, including Mitch and Tim.
